Birthing Barriers

In collaboration with Kindred Space LA, we’ve learned the real world implications of developing an app for Black, queer birthing people in South LA. We learned how to implement design solutions that are empathetic, community-based, and resourceful. With careful research and considering our positionalities as designers, we developed an app that provides gender affirming care, educational resources, and community building.

Problem Statement: Black queer birthing people in the U.S. face greater social determinants in accessing health services such as racial, gender and queer discrimination, and lack the resources, support and inclusive care they need. Solution Statement: Create an extension of Kindred Space L.A. that supports Black queer birthing clients through gender affirming care, educational resources, and community buidling while promoting Black joy.

System Design: When developing the System Design, we went through several iterations of buttons, fonts, colors, and icons. When deciding on the final design, we made sure text and buttons are legible, there is high contrast for ADA compliance and readability, the backgrounds are pretty but not too busy or overwhelming, so we turned down the opacity. We wanted to make sure the action buttons look clickable and grab your attention. We made the action buttons a bright yellow to match with Kindred Space’s website design and branding and added a nice drop shadow to make them stand out more. Melissa added their illustrations to the Sectional Buttons and Baby Development tabs
